Case Study: Media Company
A media company encompasses Newspapers, Magazines, Television, Radio, other Entertainment etc. The company would generally provide their own content and be interested in providing branded mobile services such as World News, Sport, Horoscopes, Voting, Program listings, episodes update, chat.
In this case study we will consider a TV company called Titan who wants to implement mobile services for voting on its reality TV show, Zoo, and an update on soap episodes for Bonsai Road and Hospice NY.
The Challenge
Titan needed to reach out to their audience through mobile devices. However, the TV station needed a model that allowed it to reach the mass market and sustain their mobile operations.
The station had already launched some mobile services such as SMS text voting, premium calls, and On-Device Portal applications. However, the operational expenditure for maintaining service updates and content is making the model un-profitable, and the declining usage figures indicates an undesirable trend.
Titan has chosen to deploy iOTA On-Device Services to mobilize their TV programs and soap epsiods.
The Result
Initially, the uptake was slow as Titan only advertised the application on their TV station when the Zoo program was on air. However, as the application included a "Send to a Friend" option, the extended viral marketing allowed the TV Station to sign more than 35% of their program users within 3 months.
Titan decided to include adverts and charge for service transactions; 70p to vote on Zoo and 40p for an update on Bonsai Road or Hospice NY. The revenues in the first 3 months after launch made the operation profitable while usage and data traffic increased significantly over the traditional services.
Unfortunately not all phones have their java internet setting correct. The client detects this and asks the users if they want the settings sent to them. This allowed Titan to ensure an even wider reach to the mass market.
The solution included a bundle of Premimum SMS services and IP-based services allowing the TV station to provide more services to their users with less cost.
The update of the Zoo voting lists were done by Titan's staff, and subscribers received the update Over-The-Air (OTA) to their phones in time for the next vote.
Titan has configured the iOTA Messenger to launch automatically at set times. This provided good visibility and a reminder to the user ,which was vital for increasing traffic and revenues.
